The Program Remus cottage is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, built in the 1920’s with a two story addition added to the south side in the 1980’s. The current owners recently purchased the home in 2016 and have begun updating some of the house. The objective of this renovation was to create a space of intersection between the nature surrounding the house, and the house itself. It was crucial to keep the capacity of guests the house could accommodate to a maximum of ten people.
The Solution The location is an integral part of the cottage. Therefore intersecting the natural surroundings with the interior of the house was paramount. Through the use of East and West facing sanctums, natural materials, and flex spaces that allow the house to accommodate the seasons and varying amount of inhabitants, the Remus Cottage exists as a divergence between the natural and man-made.
